  • Owen Electric wins approval to alter its rate structure

    The Kentucky Public Service Commission has approved a request by Owen Electric Cooperative Corp. to alter its rate structure to more accurately reflect the cost of serving its residential and small commercial customers.

    The changes are designed to leave Owen Electric’s total revenue unchanged. Bills for individual customers will change, depending on the amount of electric consumption. The PSC ordered that the new rates be phased in over the next three years.

  • Beshear issues consumer protection order activating price gouging statute

    After multiple tornadoes and severe storms caused heavy damage across the state, Gov. Steve Beshear Saturday signed a consumer protection executive order at the request of Attorney General Jack Conway to implement Kentucky’s price-gouging laws statewide as of Friday, March 2.

  • Firefighter Andrew Stark remained on post

    Nineteen-year-old firefighter Andrew Stark watched as dark, swirling storm clouds rushed at him as he stood outside Milton Fire Station No. 2 on Friday afternoon. A number of volunteers preparing for a planned ALS fundraiser set for the following day had been in earlier but had scattered for their homes when the storm warnings sounded. Now Stark manned the station alone.

  • Redistricting blocked

    FRANKFORT — A judge granted House Republicans and Democratic state Sen. Kathy Stein a temporary injunction Tuesday in their legal challenge of Kentucky’s new legislative district boundaries.

    Franklin Circuit Court Judge Phillip Shepherd extended the filing deadline for legislative candidates until 4 p.m. Friday.

  • FCC OKs Insight-Time Warner merger

    Some Kentucky residents could soon be seeing information from Time Warner Cable showing up in their mailboxes.

    On Wednesday, Feb. 1, the Federal Communications Commission approved the sale of Insight Communications, the cable provider for Carroll County and the largest provider in the state, to Time Warner Cable.

  • ALS fundraiser set for March 3

    “Bob’s Bunch Battling ALS” is planning a fundraising event on March 3 to raise funds for ALS research and bring awareness to the local region about the disease.

    ALS—Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is commonly called “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” after the Hall of Fame New York Yankees first baseman who succumbed to the disease in 1941.

  • Bridge closure dates announced

    State officials have announced the planned dates for the first of two five-day closures during the replacement of the Milton-Madison Bridge.

    The bridge will be closed April 25-29, during which time crews with Walsh Construction will work around the clock to remove the existing approaches on both sides of the river and attach the temporary approaches to the 82-year-old Ohio River span.

  • Henry native survives cruise nightmare

    Henry County native Joe Ryan, 23, is looking forward to a trip to Destin, Fla., with friends later this year, after he graduates from Eastern Kentucky University.

    It will be a landlocked location – “No captain needed for time on the beach,” he said during a phone interview Monday.

    Seems mundane, but Ryan is ready for mundane.

  • Beshear authorizes funding for federal heating crisis program

    FRANKFORT, Ky. – Gov. Steve Beshear announced the immediate distribution of $9.5 million in additional federal appropriations for Kentucky’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

     “The availability of home heating assistance is critical at this time of the year,” Gov. Beshear said. “More funding means more Kentucky families can apply for assistance to stay warm during the colder months.”
