  • Boone had plans to link Ghent, Vevay by rail

    An entrepreneur from Dayton, Ohio, at one time envisioned building a railroad line that would have extended from Ghent, Ky., to Savannah, Ga.

    Albert E. Boone, an indirect relative of Kentucky explorer Daniel Boone, was born Nov. 18, 1845, in Dayton, where he was educated and, at 16, enlisted in Co. I, 84th Ohio Volunteer Infantry at the start of the Civil War.

    According to “West Virginia and its People,” published in 1913, Boone eventually rose to the rank of colonel during his Army career.

  • Dixie Chixx capture 12U state softball championship

    Dixie Chixx head coach David Craig asked his team two questions at the beginning of the season: How will you handle failure? What do you want people to think about you when they watch you play or practice?

    He told them he didn’t want them to tell him the answers, just to show him on the field. The Carroll County girls responded in a big way, rallying to win the Indiana State 12U Babe Ruth Championship over the Fourth of July weekend in Corydon, Ind. The Dixie Chixx defeated Corydon, 12-8, Sunday in the championship.

    Vacation Bible School will be held at Worthville Baptist Church, 53 Jackson Ridge Rd, in Worthville for children three years of age to sixth grade, from 6:30 -8:30 p.m., July 13-17, 2014. Join them for a week of learning and activities.

    Worthville Baptist Church, 53 Jackson Ridge Rd, in Worthville will hold a free community picnic, from 4-7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 12, 2014, all are invited to join them for fun, games, inflatables, gospel music and fellowship.

    Carrollton Lions Club meeting at noon at Butler Park lodge.

    Carroll County Water District No. 1 meets at 3 p.m. at the office, 205 Main Cross St., Ghent.

    Champions for a Drug Free Carroll County holds at town hall meeting on heroin from 6-7:30 p.m.  at Sanders Community Park. State Trooper Dave Roberts will be the featured speaker. The event includes free food and resources on prevention and drug abuse.

    Carroll County Tobacco Festival Committee meets, 6:30 p.m., at Welch’s Riverside Restaurant.
