  • Improvements in park operation sought

    Local residents can expect upcoming changes and improvements in the operation of Carroll County’s Robert Westrick Memorial Park.

    Carroll County Fiscal Court discussed a number of constituent complaints about the 35-acre recreational facility during its Aug. 25 meeting.  One of the most frequent has been miscommunication, or the total lack of communication between staff, coaches and participants, according to Carroll County Judge-Executive Harold “Shorty” Tomlinson.

  • Drug dropoff program will take to road

    Carroll County will have a 21st Century traveling medicine show of sorts when Champions for a Drug Free Carroll County and law enforcement team up to help dispose of unused or out-of-date medications.

    On Saturday, Sept. 19, Champions will be sponsoring a “Dump Your Meds,” day when Sanders, Ghent, Worthville and English will each be visited by a traveling drop box where residents can get rid of medications, no questions asked.

  • Soccer Panthers garner tie with Walton Verona

    A tie is neither a victory nor a loss, but to a team that has never won a game the Carroll County Panther soccer team was thrilled to get a tie.

    Tuesday, September 1, the Walton Verona Bearcats traveled down I-71 to Panther Field and left with a tie, 3-3.  

    “This was an excellent game,” head coach Ben Crutcher said.  “Our team came to play and it was a huge improvement.  The intensity was there, the heart was there.”

    A soccer match is 80 minutes long and Crutcher praised his team for playing two complete halves.

  • Rotary Club Golf Scramble

    The annual Carrollton Rotary Club/Irving Materials Inc. golf scramble will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9 at General Butler State Park.  Proceeds from the scramble benefit local students through the Rotary scholarship program.

    The scramble offers morning and afternoon flights with six member teams best ball format for 18 holes. Participants compete for a $600 cash prize and $300 for each runner-up team in each flight. Random drawings for other prizes are also awarded.

  • Streetscape project wins $186,622 grant

    The four-block area surrounding the courthouse in downtown Carrollton will soon have new sidewalks, landscaping and lighting with funding from a $186,622 grant awarded last week.

    The project will also bring new informational signs about the community’s history to the courthouse square area, which is surronded by Highland Avenue, Main, Court and Fifth streets.

    Gov. Steve Beshear announced the $186,622 Transportation Enhancement grant for the streetscape project Thursday.
