Ordinance enforcement once again has taken a hefty chunk of Carrollton City Council’s time as residents flocked to a meeting to voice concerns.

Letters informing residents and businesses they are in violation of various ordinances brought out many individuals to speak at the regular meeting of city council Monday, Aug. 24.

Sidewalk sales and trees and shrubs blocking access or views were the two main points of concern for those attending the meeting.

Art Alphin is ready to let the cat of the bag – a confession, if you will.

Alphin, 61, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, opened a Bedford manufacturing company in January 1991 called A-Square. For nearly 20 years, the building that sits in behind the Bedford Water Company on U.S. 42 – and what went on inside – has been a mystery, except to a select few people.

“The locals have had a lot of question about what went on in this building, and now they’ll know,” Alphin in an interview last week.

With school barely in session a week, the Trimble County volleyball program has played two varsity matches, two junior varsity matches and one freshman match.

The Raiders have won all five.

“We have four returning (varsity) starters from last year,” said Head Coach Ruth Staples, “so I expect great things for this team.”

In varsity action, Trimble beat Owen County 25-10 and 25-14. Last Thursday, the varsity team traveled to Gallatin County and won 25-10 and 25-23.

Retired Trimble County educator Dean Bowling has assembled a collection of stories from his youth, and others about his ancestors, for a new book, “Mules and Wildcat Heads.”

Published by Xlibris Corp. of Bloomington, Ind., the book centers on “those Eastern Kentucky hills in which I grew up; a story of the love and admiration for those who influenced me the most,” Bowling explained.
