    Even the unseasonably cool weather could not cool off the hot bluegrass talent that had strains of fiddles, mandolins and singing wafting through General Butler State Resort Park last weekend.

    The Back to the Past for the Future Bluegrass Bash featured the music of the 11 bands in town for the event that inspired a lot of toe tapping and dancing.

  • Yager a standout at basketball camp

    A local Carroll County senior Panther basketball player attended Blue Chips Basketball Camp recently and was tapped as an all-star from the group of 425.

    Will Yager, a shooting guard for the Panthers, attended the first session of Rick Bolus 30th annual High Potential Blue-Chip Basketball camp with 425 campers from 26 states and Germany.  Yager was selected as one of the All Stars in the camp and participated in the All Star Games and the 2009 Bluegrass Insider Roundball Classic in April.

  • Additional road funds will assist with projects

    On Thursday, July 16, Gov. Steve Beshear said he is taking action to help hard-pressed local governments bear the cost of necessary public services. At the governor’s direction, 20 percent of a fund ordinarily spent on rural secondary roads by the state Department of Highways – about $21 million – is being set aside for use on local routes that counties have identified as priorities, according to an announcement from the governor’s public information office.

  • County funding paves road to new park fishing pier

    Carroll County Fiscal Court voted in its July 14 meeting to appropriate $8,000 to pave the gravel access road to the new fishing pier at General Butler State Resort Park.

    The fishing pier, extending into the lake at the park, provides accessibility for persons with disabilities enabling them to fish, according to Carroll County Judge-Executive Harold “Shorty” Tomlinson. The pier was funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a bureau in the Department of Interior, with some funds contributed by local agencies.

  • Hornaday, Kligerman winners at Kentucky

    Weather conditions for Kentucky Speedway’s third weekend of the season couldn’t have been any better for the race teams and race fans. Temperatures were in the 70s Friday and Saturday for the Camping World Truck Series race, the Built Ford Tough 225, and the ARCA RE/MAX Series Click It or Ticket Buckle-Up Kentucky 150.

    Friday was a day of practice for both series as teams worked to find the right setup for the races and Saturday’s qualifying sessions. Ron Hornaday, Jr. won the Keystone Light Pole Award in truck qualifying.

  • 53 enjoy soccer camp at county park

    Soccer camp director Greg Damron, wearing his wide brimmed white hat, could be seen from anywhere in the Robert Westrick Memorial Park as he taught and encouraged 53 campers during soccer camp last week.

    Damron organized the camp this year as a lower cost alternative for parents with children who are interested in learning or improving their skills in soccer.  Camp was held every evening last week according to Damron.

    Damron could be heard over four soccer fields barking out instructions and encouragement calling each camper by name during camp.

  • Carrollton to host Governor’s cycle event here in October

    Governor Steve Beshear has designated Save the Grand Theatre’s signature 225-mile cycling event as the “Governor’s Autumn Bicycle Ride Across Kentucky.” GABRAKY is a scenic ride following rural roadways across the state through numerous regions and begins at the state boundary with Indiana at the Ohio River at Carrollton and ends at the state boundary with Tennessee at Dale Hollow State Resort Park in southern Kentucky.

  • Father pleads ‘not guilty’ in baby-shaking incident

    Steven M. Finkel––the 21-year-old father charged with first-degree criminal abuse of his 7-week-old daughter––was arraigned in District Court, Thursday, July 9.  Finkel pleaded not guilty to the charges and a preliminary hearing was set for Thursday, July 16.

    In a separate hearing on the same day, Bridgette Saunders, Finkel’s court-appointed public defender requested a lower bond stating Finkel had no record, would be staying with his parents and would have no contact with the victim.

  • Officials confident speedway measure will benefit local area

    Area government leaders have high expectations for new legislation signed into law by Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear, which provides incentives for business expansion in the state. The new measure, in part, offers tax credits for growth at nearby Kentucky Speedway in Gallatin County. Speedway officials are planning a major expansion project at the facility in connection with luring a race on the NASCAR Sprint Cup season schedule.

  • Golf scramble to benefit cancer patient

    I never dreamed I would need to have a benefit in my own honor for a disease I never dreamed I would be facing at this time of my life.

    My name is Renee’ Luckett and I reside in Trimble County, Ky. with my husband and two beautiful children but I have always liked to work in Carrollton, Ky. I work for Insurance Associates as an Insurance Agent and absolutely love and miss my job.

    Unfortunately, I was diagnosed in January of this year with Invasive Breast Cancer, Stage 3 at the young age of 34 years old.
