  • ADF funds available for local groups

    Applications for Area Development Funds are available to be picked up at the Carroll County Judge-Executive’s office. All local governments and non-profit organizations are eligible to apply for the funds.

    The applications are to be filled out and returned by 4 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2009, according to Carroll County Judge-Executive Harold “Shorty” Tomlinson. “They have the rest of this month and most of July to get them back in,” he said.

    My plans for the future, it seems, are all for naught.

    I received in the mail a letter that says, basically, that the world will end in 2012. Of course, there is no return address or signature to identify the writer/sender. All I know is it was mailed from Louisville 40231.

    But shoot. I had a lot of big plans for 2012.

  • Students receive diplomas at ceremony

    Graduation is an exciting time in the life of a high school student and it is equally as exciting to those students who have waited up to 30 years in some cases for a chance to don a cap and gown and turn their tassel.

    Nineteen students from Jefferson Community and Technical College adult learning center and Jobs for America’s Graduates, the JAG program, had the opportunity to walk across the stage at Carroll County Middle School Sam P. Simpson auditorium and get their certificates.

  • Edwards wins $8,000 places ninth in national All-American fishing tourney

    A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work, and Gary Edwards of Milton definitely had three good days of fishing, winning $8,000 in the All American fishing tournament.

    Edwards, a local competitive bass angler and national winner fished his way into the prestigious All-American last October after coming in sixth in the Chevy Trucks Wild Card tournament.  Edwards took home $8,000 for his ninth place finish May 28-30 in Moline, Ill., in the All American.

  • Record number turnout for River Sweep event

    A record crowd came out Saturday, June 20 for the annual Ohio River Sweep at Point Park, including a poster contest, a cookout, prizes and a general party atmosphere.

    River Sweep is an event that employs volunteers to clean the riverbank of the Ohio River and its tributaries by picking up trash that has been left or has accumulated because of flooding.

  • Milton OKs budget, rate increases

    With Milton Mayor Donnie Oakley still in the hospital recovering from injuries received in a car accident last month, Commissioner Steve Brierly lead Thursday’s meeting to give final approval to the city’s 2009-10 budget.

    There were no changes to the document, in which city Clerk Shannon Hoskins projects $164,440 in revenue for the general fund and expenditures at $158,850.

    Also approved on its second reading was an ordinance to increase the city’s water and sewer fees.

  • City opts to outsource printing of tax bills

    Carrollton City Council opted to spend less and get less when city clerk Becky Pyles made a proposal to invest in a new computer software program that would put the city’s tax bills on the city’s computers.

    In a written proposal to council, Pyles explained that the property valuation office notified her they would no longer be printing the city’s tax bills.

  • County OKs Dow Corning foreign trade zone request

    Dow Corning Corp. has filed an application with the federal government seeking to have Carroll County become a subzone of the Louisville Foreign Trade Zone, according to Carroll County Judge-Executive Harold “Shorty” Tomlinson.

    Fiscal Court approved wording of an agreement between the company and county government where Dow Corning will make a payment annually to the local school corporation in lieu of taxes, based on an annual assessment.

  • Youth soccer league has a mission

    When members of his church decided to offer a summer soccer program for local children, Pastor Tom Starks was prepared.

    Or so he thought.

    Relying on his own background in the sport, he held a coach’s clinic and trained seven people to help. Then he prayed that enough children would sign up to fill rosters for seven teams.

    “God outsmarted me again,” Starks said in a phone interview Monday. By the end of the sign-up period, 157 children – enough for 21 teams – had registered to play.

  • Relay tops $30,000

    The grand total, so far, for this year’s Trimble County Relay for Life is $30,043, according to organizer Myrna Persell.

    The amount far surpasses last year’s total of just over $22,000.

    “I’m just ecstatic,” she said. Other counties have industries that donate large amounts of funds and also provide volunteers for the event. Here in rural Trimble County, the funding was raised by the hard work and dedication of individuals and small business. “To me, that’s something to be proud of.”
