  • Open for business

    Airgas opted to open the gates to its new air separation unit with a blow torch and a chain cutting Monday instead of the normal ribbon cutting to welcome 20 new jobs to Carroll County.

    The air separation unit, known as an ASU, was built on Dow Corning property on Four Mile Road and it will be the largest customer of the new plant, Tom Thoman, senior vice president of Airgas, Merchant Gases said to a large crowd gathered for the official commissioning of the plant Monday, June 15.

  • River Sweep cleanup helps beautify a key community resource

    While the Ohio River is such an important part of life in Carroll County, we often take it for granted.

    The river is the reason we have many of the industries in our community that provide jobs for local residents and for those throughout the region. It is also one of the reasons that the county attracts so many tourists to the area each year.

    On Saturday morning, the Ohio River will be the focus of a large group of volunteers who will hit the riverbanks to rid it of debris and garbage that collects through the year as the river levels rise and decline.

  • Hendrick, Stewart named to all-region tourney team

    Senior Chris Hendrick and sophomore Ethan Stewart were named to the eighth region all tournament team last week in Shelby County following tournament play there.

    Ethan had a great tournament with four hits in two games, head coach Jay Jones said.  “He really had a solid post season.  He also had several hits in the district tourney.”

  • Cemetery, sexton contract top city agenda

    Complaints about the appearance of the Bedford Cemetery topped the agenda at the June 15 Bedford City Commission meeting.

    The city bought the cemetery from the local lodge of the International Order of Odd Fellows for $1 in September. The lodge disbanded due to dwindling membership.

  • Appreciation expressed for care after accident

    On May 14, my wife and I got the phone call no parent wants to get. Our daughter called screaming, “Help Me Mommy.”

    She was calling from inside her SUV that she had lost control of and overturned. We immediately called 911 and a state trooper was there within a minute of our call. Emily was taken to Carroll County Memorial Hospital where we were told that she had a broken back. She was transferred to Kosair Children’s Hospital. She had surgery to repair her back, but will need extensive rehab for the next couple of months.

  • Free meal program gets rave reviews

    Perhaps it’s the economy. Or maybe the food is just that good.

    At Morgan Community Center in Bedford, coordinator Rita Davis said she and her summer meal program volunteers have served as many as 70 meals in a day – about twice the average number served last year.

  • TC school retirees honored at June 4 breakfast

    Trimble County school personnel gathered for a June 4 breakfast to honor five employees who retired from service this year.

    Superintendent Marcia Dunaway thanked the retirees and other faculty and staff at the breakfast for all their hard work teaching the students, bringing them to school on buses, cooking for them and taking care of them.

    “We have a wonderful school system,” she said. “We get a lot of compliments. This is a great place. It’s home; it will always be special to me.”

  • Trimble Relay for Life poised to surpass 2008 donations

    The 2009 Relay for Life kicked off officially Monday, as team captains from all over Trimble County turned in money already collected.

    Organizer Myrna Persell, herself a cancer survivor, said $13,450 was brought in by teams Monday by many – but not all – of the 32 teams. She said the preliminary amount doesn’t include sponsorships, money raised from the sale of luminaria and money collected during a recent promotion at Subway in Bedford.

  • Fire chiefs ask drivers to be patient

    Two local fire chiefs are asking motorists to be patient if they see fire trucks attempting to cross the Milton-Madison Bridge.

    Prior to the fire at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Madison, Ind., Ind., a 15-ton weight limit was set on the Milton-Madison Bridge by the state of Kentucky in response to structural deficiencies discovered in a December bridge inspection.
