  • Report shows Carroll near top in smoker numbers

    Kentucky appears to be slowly letting go of its tobacco heritage that has kept the state at the bottom of national lists on the number of people who light up or use smokeless products.

    For years, Kentucky has been the number one state in the nation for percentage of residents who smoke. But this year’s numbers show the Bluegrass state has dropped to number three behind West Virginia as first and Indiana as second, according to the Center for Disease Control.

  • Kory Brocious honored

    Kory Brocious, a senior at Carroll County High School, was recognized by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association as the recipient of the 8th Region Male Athlete Sportsmanship Scholarship.

    The male and female regional recipients were presented with a plaque, a clock, various gifts and their scholarships at the annual Sportsmanship Awards Recognition Banquet at the Embassy Suites in Lexington. The program is sponsored by the Forcht Group of Kentucky and the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

  • Trimble, Carroll records duplicated archived in Frankfort

    Last month’s fire at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Madison, Ind., served as a wake-up call to governments in surrounding communities to review safety procedures and storage of important records and documents.

    But Trimble County residents need not worry about the vital records held at the Bedford Courthouse. Most are duplicated electronically and archived at state facilities in Frankfort, said Judge-Executive Randy Stevens.

  • ArvinMeritor severance plan wins union OK

    ArvinMeritor and the United Auto Workers local 1813 have reached a settlement on what union employees will receive as the plant shuts down later this year.

    The company released a statement Tuesday, June 2, confirming it has reached a closure agreement with the United Auto Workers Local 1813 in Carrollton.  “The agreement was supported by union leadership and recently ratified with a 93 percent vote by the Carrollton workforce,” according to the written statement.

  • Thanks extended for veterans flag project

    I want to thank everyone who has helped me flag veterans graves on the Sunday before Memorial Day.  Each year American Legion Post 41 sponsors this program and has for a long time. This is done with many dedicated volunteers who show up each year without being asked. They just know it happens.

    I have taken care of this for Legion Post 41 for about 15 years and have enjoyed each year.

    If you have a child support case in Carroll County and feel like you are being treated unfairly by the case workers — whether you are the one getting or sending support — you can report your issue to either Jim Monk or his assistant Nick Marsh at (502) 732-7009. Just make an appointment.

    Mr. Marsh is new and is changing some things and assures me he will listen to your complaint and look into it. The case workers and other people in that office work for Mr. Monk.

  • Cemetery policies reviewed

    The Bedford City Commission held the first reading of a cemetery ordinance outlining policies and procedures for the city’s operation of the Bedford I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

    The city bought the cemetery in September from the local lodge of the International Order of Odd Fellows. Because of declining numbers, the lodge sold the cemetery as one of its final orders of business before folding.

    “They were going to put it on the open market,” Commissioner Darrell Harmon explained during the meeting.

  • Collision on Barebone Road injures three

    Three men were injured in a two-car collision Thursday afternoon, May 14, on Barebone Road in Trimble County.

    Sgt. Larry Newton of Post 5, Kentucky State Police, said Friday the two vehicles sideswiped each other on the narrow, winding road shortly after 1 p.m. A preliminary investigation indicates that an eastbound pickup truck driven by Justin Edwards, 20, of Simpsonville, left the roadway, struck a tree and caught fire. The truck was completely destroyed.
