  • Mail carriers did their best during ice storm

    Editor:

    First I would like to thank everyone who cleaned their steps, porches and in front of their mail boxes during the recent snow and ice; it was a tremendous help.

    Further, I would like to thank the employees who came to work every day – some of whom did not have electricity for several days at home, and yet made every effort to get the mail delivered.

  • Walk for Awareness to raise funds to battle congenital heart defects

    Area residents can put on their walking shoes Saturday, Feb. 7, to help raise money for children with congenital heart defects.

    The Walk for Awareness begins at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church Family Life Center, 213 Main St., Owenton, and will feature shopping for Valentine’s Day gifts, inflatables for children, a silent auction and a book fair, along with entertainment.

    Proceeds will benefit Kosair Children’s Hospital’s Cardiology Division and God’s Special Little Hearts, which is co-sponsoring the event with the Owen County Extension Homemakers.

  • Curtain to rise on student production of ‘Grease’

    The Pink Ladies and T-Birds of Rydell High will be be-bopping onstage in a musical production of “Grease” this weekend at Carroll County Middle School.

    Performances are set for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6-7, in the Sam Simpson Auditorium at CCMS. Tickts are $5, and are only being sold at the door.

  • County recovering from storm’s effects

    Carroll County wasn’t spared in last week’s snow-and-ice storm, which battered most of the eastern half of the United States that started with snow Monday, followed by sleet and freezing rain – then more snow – Tuesday and Wednesday.

    The ice did the worst damage, bringing down trees and power lines and leaving 1,234 Carroll County customers of Owen Electric Cooperative without power. Co-op officials said service was restored Monday evening, Feb. 2, to all 18,000 customers who lost power.

  • Electronic polling to be used in bridge design selection

    Electronic polling will be used next week to help designers learn more about what local residents want to see in a new bridge.

    A meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 at the Brown Memorial Gymnasium in Madison, Ind. will give the general public the opportunity to talk with designers and engineers working on the Milton-Madison Bridge project, as well as look at some design elements that could be included in a possible new bridge.

  • Details of murder released

    Additional details about the death of Steven Michael “Catfish” Jones were released yesterday, as his accused killer appeared in Trimble County District Court for a preliminary hearing.

    Judge Jerry Crosby agreed with prosecutors that the evidence presented yesterday was sufficient to bound the case over to a Trimble County Grand Jury and ordered Clester E. “Cletus” Mullins’ to remain in jail, pending bond.

  • Edwards angling for a win in national tournament

    Winning new bass boats and big cash prizes are the two top things competition anglers dream of – and Gary Edwards of Milton, Ky is fishing his way toward a huge payout.

    Edwards will compete in the  May 28-30 Bass Fishing League-Walmart All-American Tournament in Moline, Ill. A first-place win there would include a $100,000 prize and move him into the Walmart FLW Outdoors Forrest Wood Cup tournament on Lake Murray in Columbia, S.C. The Aug. 14 tournament has a first-place payout of $1 million.

  • Public library on the move

    Additional computers, two study rooms, an expanded multi-purpose room and a reading garden are just a few of the features planned for the new Trimble County Public Library.

    The library’s Board of Trustees has announced intentions to move forward with plans for a new 10,000 sq. ft. building to be located just south of the Bedford city limits, on U.S. 42 near Shepherd Lane.

  • County weathers the storm with an army of responders and volunteers

    Mother Nature’s worst was met with Trimble County’s best last week.

    As quickly as the winter storm covered roads with snow and ice, local volunteers and emergency personnel came to the rescue.

    Within hours of the first snowflake making landfall, thousands of the county’s residents found their homes dark and cold as thick coats of ice and falling tree limbs pulled power lines from poles.

  • Alleged bank robber arrested in Tennessee

    Tips from the community to local law enforcement resulted in the arrest of a suspect in the Jan. 23 bank robbery of Carrollton’s First National Bank.

    The suspect, Cecil Messer, 45, originally of McKenzie, Ala., was apprehended in Nashville, Tenn., Friday, Jan. 30, by U.S. Marshals, the Nashville Police Department and Tennessee State Police.

    Messer was arrested, charged with first-degree bank robbery, a Class B felony, and held on a  $250,000 cash bond in a Nashville jail, Carrollton Police Chief Mike Willhoite said yesterday.
