    Fiscal court agrees to purchase vehicle for county coroner

    Carroll County Fiscal Court Tuesday agreed to seek bids on a new vehicle for Carroll County Coroner David Wilhoite.

    District 1 Magistrate Floyd Bowling made a motion, seconded by Judge-Executive Harold “Shorty” Tomlinson, to buy the vehicle off state contract.

    District 2 Magistrate Deanie Miller said he doesn’t understand why the county would want to go off state contract.

    “I’d rather buy local,” he said.

  • Redistricting makes Hornback county’s new state senator

    Hello. My name is Paul Hornback and I am your new state senator.

    It is our constitutional duty every 10 years to realign our voting districts according to population after each census. This act fulfills the requirement of one man, one vote. Because of population shifts, the 20th State Senatorial District now includes Carroll County in addition to part of Boone and Jefferson counties and all of Gallatin, Henry, Shelby and Spencer counties. (The final congressional district lines are still being discussed between the chambers.)

  • Library gathering on anniversary recounted stories from ‘37 flood

    In 1987, the 50th anniversary of the flood, I was in my fifth year as director of the public library. During those first five years I had heard many of our patrons refer to the flood, had seen the plaque in the court house, had learned that many of the old copies of The News-Democrat had been destroyed as water rose into the newspaper offices, and had begun to gather photographs and articles about that very significant period in Carroll County’s history.

  • Tilley on Dean’s List

    The University of Northwestern Ohio is proud to acknowledge that John D. Tilley of Carrollton has made the Dean’s List for the November 2011 session in the College of Applied Technologies. Full-time students must receive a grade point average of 3.5 or better to be named to the Dean’s List.

  • Weeks elected president of Development board

    Carroll County Community Development Corporation elected its 2012-13 officers and board members at its annual meeting on Jan. 17, held at the General Butler State Resort Park Conference Center.

  • Study finds Champions successful in first year

    Champions for a Drug Free Carroll County performed well in year one of their five-year Drug Free Communities federal grant. DFC is a collaborative initiative sponsored by the Office of National Drug Control Policy and the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

  • Incumbents file papers for the May 22 primary

    Local voters will not only have their chance to choose candidates to run for president this May, they also will be selecting candidates to run for circuit court clerk and commonwealth attorney in Carroll County.

    Carroll County Clerk Alice Marsh said Monday that other races up for grabs this year in the state include the 4th Congressional District seat now held by Geoff Davis, who is retiring from office. Additionally, Rep. Rick Rand’s 47th District state House of Representatives seat is up for election this year.

  • REVVING UP FOR RACE FEST

    Plans for the second annual Race Fest event leading up to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Quaker State 400 at the Kentucky Speedway are beginning to take shape.

    Committee members met Wednesday, Jan. 18 at Down on Main to discuss what they would like to see at this year’s local event, set for Wednesday, June 27. Race weekend will begin with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series UNOH 225 on Thursday, June 28, followed by the NASCAR Nationwide Series Feed The Children 300 on Friday and culminating in the main event Saturday.
