    We need the community’s help. The Carroll County Tobacco Festival Committee has been approached by several citizens to consider coordinating the development of a museum.

    The museum would feature items of historical significance that would reflect the history of Carroll and neighboring counties.

  • Because of them, there was light

    To the editor:

    The Rotary Motto is Service about self, and last week we watched this motto practiced in real life.

    When the ice storm of 2009 hit this area and several of us were without electric, our utility crews were working around the clock to help us. The members of these crews sacrificed their families, health and sleep to help restore our power. They worked in less then desirable weather conditions of snow, freezing rain, ice, wind and temperatures around zero. Most utility employees were putting in 16-plus hour days just to help their neighbors.

  • Local attorney suspended for not paying fees

    Attorney Marc A. Bryant of 521 Highland Ave., Carrollton has been suspended by the Kentucky Bar Association for non-payment of dues, effective Wednesday, December 10.

    Bryant owes $220 in dues plus a $50 late for a total of $270.  He will also be required to pay a $250 filing fee if he applies for restoration in less than five years, according to Amy Carman, Director of Communications with Kentucky Bar Association in Frankfort.

  • Much to grin about in February

    To the editor:

    February is National Children’s Dental Health Month-a time when schools, dentists and health organizations everywhere promote oral health education, and teach children how to practice good oral health

    According to the Kentucky Department of Public Health, Kentucky has the nation’s highest rate of tooth loss and more than one quarter of the residents of this Commonwealth have lost six or more teeth due to tooth decay or gum disease. This news is alarming.

  • Homecoming bittersweet for Panther teams

    The Lady Panthers could have been mistaken for the Pink Ladies of the musical “Grease,” donning pink jackets and headbands to promote breast cancer awareness during warm-ups prior to Saturday’s game against the Lady Demons of Williamstown.

    In addition to being Homecoming, the game was part of Coaches vs. Cancer, and $1 from every ticket sold went to benefit the American Cancer Society. The event raised a total of $1,025 for ACS.

    The girls varsity team wasn’t so charitable to the visiting Demons, though.

  • Fiscal Court OKs lone bid to repair Wheeler roof

    Carroll County Fiscal Court accepted a bid Feb. 10 of $46,490 to repair the roof on the county’s William L. Wheeler Hall of Justice on Clay Street.

    The contract went to Tri-State Roofing of Lexington, Ky., the sole bidder.

    Garland Van Hook of the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts, who attended the meeting with county Circuit Clerk Laman Stark, told the court he  was surprised that only one company bid on the project. He said he had expected at least three bids.

  • Designed to Please

    If license plates on the cars parked near Brown Memorial Gymnasium were an accurate indication, Kentucky and Indiana residents had nearly equal representation at a meeting last Thursday night to discuss potential construction of a new Milton-Madison Bridge.

    The Feb. 12 meeting was intended to give the general public an opportunity to speak with transportation officials, project engineers, designers and others working to develop a plan for replacing or rehabilitating the structure connecting Milton, Ky. with Madison, Ind.

  • Homeless count to proceed Feb. 19

    The Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission is conducting a count of homess families and individuals in five rural Kentucky counties tomorrow, Feb. 19.

    The counties involved are Carrol, Gallatin, Grant, Owen and Pendleton. The count originally was planned for Jan. 29, but was rescheduled because of weather.

  • Panthers take down Raiders with 49-46 win

    After a crushing defeat Saturday at Homecoming, the Panthers traveled to Trimble County High School on Monday, Feb. 16, and earned redemption.

    The team met Head Coach Carroll Yager’s challenge to step up and complete for the full 32 minutes of the ballgame against the Raiders.

    “This was a good overall win for us, and everybody that played contributed,” Yager said after the game.

    The Panthers held Raider top-scorer Aaron Law to only eight points, and two scoreless periods.

  • McGlennen to retire as WVFD chief

    Pat McGlennen has announced he will retire as chief of the Worthville Volunteer Fire Department at the end of March.

    McGlennen, a crane operator with Flour-Daniels, said he is resigning because he is soon being transferred to Harrodsburg for six years.

    “I cannot in good faith continue to keep up with the fire department,” he said, adding he has served the department for 10 years. For 30 months, I’ve worked six or seven days a week and I’m tired.”
