  • ‘Grease’ packs ‘em in at CCMS

    It was standing room only during the Friday and Saturday performances of “Grease” this past weekend in the Sam Simpson Auditorium at Carroll County Middle School.

    In fact, Saturday’s tickets were sold out and hopeful theater-goers were asked to return for an extra showing Sunday afternoon.

    And it seems the wait was worth it. Audiences were treated to an impressive production with fabulous sets, excellent costumes and outstanding singing and dancing by the actors, all middle- and high-school students.

  • Talent search under way for Chamber banquet entertainment

    If you have talent, any talent, the Chamber of Commerce is looking for you.

    The chamber will be hosting local talent searches on the fourth Thursday of each month from February through July. The winner of each monthly contest will be invited to the annual chamber banquet in August to perform. Performers will be judged by the membership, and the overall winners will receive $750 for first place and a trophy; $200 for second place; and $100 for third.

    The chamber raises money at its banquet through a silent auction, and usually features a guest speaker.

  • Trimble, Owen join cancer fight

    “Winning is the only option.”

    That’s the pledge many in the stands will have emblazoned across their pink T-shirts when the Lady Raiders take on the Owen County Lady Rebels Friday night in an American Cancer Society fundraiser.

    As part of the national ACS Coaches vs. Cancer campaign, the two schools will face-off in a triple-header aimed at raising money for the organization that provides services to those afflicted with the disease, as well as money to continue the search for a cure.

    “I was talking to someone the other day and I said you were skinny. They said, ‘You haven’t seen her lately, have you?’”

    OUCH!

    It’s a good thing that I’m not sensitive about my weight or that could be akin to poking a fat bear with a pointy stick!

  • CASA seeks volunteers

    To the editor,

    Since the inception of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) in 1985 in Jefferson County, the goal has been to serve a record number of children in one year. With the expansion of the program in Henry, Oldham and Trimble counties in 2007 and the addition in 2008 of Shelby and Spencer counties, CASA has exceeded the goal of advocating for more than 500 children in 2008.

    This is a huge milestone, and we are very excited. Many thanks to the hard-working staff, volunteers and board members for making this program work.

  • Panther varsity mauls Eminence Warriors in make-up battle

    The Eminence Warriors entered the Panthers’ den Friday night and were mauled by the varsity starters and reserves, leaving with a 65-34 loss.

    In the make-up game, rescheduled because of bad weather,  the Warriors struggled to put the ball in the hole all night, though they never gave up on the defensive end of the court.  

    The Panthers led the entire game, but to the Warriors’ credit, they kept it interesting.

    Casey Cable unsealed the Panther basket with a three-pointer in the opening minutes of the game, and the Panthers never looked back.

  • Sheriff investigates burglary at State Hwy. 227 business

    An undisclosed amount of money was stolen from two safes during an apparent burglary sometime late Thursday night or early Friday morning at Craig’s Do-It Center on State Hwy. 227.

    Carroll County Sheriff Ben Smith and Deputy Jim Hamilton are investigating the burglary, which was discovered when employees reported for work Friday morning.  

    Hamilton said Monday that the glass of the door on the north side of the building had been broken, and two safes appeared to have been broken into.

  • ‘Grease’ outstanding show of students’ talent

    I would like to thank Melanie Stewart and Company for the great entertainment they provided to our community with the production of “Grease.”

    I know it took many hours of planning and practice to put on such a musical production. It is wonderful to see our students showing just a small portion of what they are capable of doing.

    Most of these students are involved in many other activities, and the commitment they showed to this project should be applauded.

    They did an outstanding job.

  • CCHS cheerleaders hosting ‘PeeWee” camp Feb. 16-20

    The Carroll County High School cheerleaders are offering a PeeWee Cheer Camp for children 3 years old through fifth grade.

    The camp will meet from 4-6 p.m. Feb. 16-20 in the CCHS cafeteria Feb. 16-20. The campers will then perform at the Feb. 20 basketball game.

    Parents must register  children for the camp by  Feb. 13. Cost is $20 per child; late registration is $25 per child.

    Each child will receive instruction from the CCHS cheerleaders and participate in cheer, dance, sidelines, jumps, partner stunts and teambuilding activities.

  • Ballinger smashing records at Campbellsville

    A former Carroll County Lady Panther basketball standout is shattering records left and right for the Campbellsville University Lady Tigers.

    Whitney Ballinger, a 6-foot, 3-inch, sophomore, has broken two shot-blocking records there, and could put one of those out of reach for years to come.

    “Breaking the record just sort of happened. I didn’t even know I was close,” Ballinger said in a recent telephone interview.

    But Ballinger doesn’t have her sights set on more records, “just winning more games,” she said.
