  • Volunteer asks businesses to embrace festival

    On behalf of the Carroll County Tobacco Festival, I am writing this letter to the editor.

    About 14 people pull together and put on the festival every year. We put this on as a tradition to the community and the farmers now and of the past. We are trying to keep the heritage going on for our younger generation.

  • Fund-raiser beneficiary says thanks for the help

    “Thank you” doesn’t quite express how grateful I felt for all of the love and support shown by my family and friends. The monies raised enabled me to remain in my home and pay several illness related expenses.

    Beyond the monetary support the expressions of love and encouragement from my community helps me have courage and faith during the hard days of recovery that lie ahead.

  • Few questions answered at Corps meeting

    About 30 residents sat in the chilly bay of the Westside Volunteer Fire Department in Prestonville on Wednesday, Nov. 19, to ask questions about a proposed liquid-asphalt storage facility.

    Louisville Paving Company of Louisville, Ky., has petitioned the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a permit to build a terminal on the Kentucky River, where barges would come to fill the storage tanks, planned for a 5-acre site just south of the Prestonville city limits.

    Tough economic times are being credited with causing a suspension of the sale of the Trimble County-based paper, as well as other area publications owned by company. The news was announced Oct. 29.

  • Company employees donate for holidays

    The employees of Fluor-Daniels got a jump start on the Christmas spirit, digging deep into their pockets so that 48 area families could have plenty of food for Thanksgiving and 76 children would have plenty of gifts come Dec. 25.

    Amy McAlister, Rayna Partin and Sheila Chowning, employees of the contractor on site at Kentucky Utilities’ Ghent Power Station, said they and their fellow co-workers collected $16,500 for Carroll County families in need. They far exceeded their goal of $10,000.

  • With 10 returning varsity players; Mefford predicts strong season

    The Carroll County Lady Panthers are looking forward to a new season, with 10 of 12 varsity players returning and experience galore in post-season play.

    The girls team ended the 2007-08 season as North Central Kentucky Conference champions and runner up in the 31st District tournament.

    “Our main loss from last season is point-guard Amber Girdy, a member of the All 8th Region team,” Head Coach Randy Mefford in an interview last week. “She averaged 11 points per game, three assists and three steals.”

  • Trimble CARES about drug and alcohol abuse

    Substance abuse is not only a problem for the man who smokes marijuana or the woman who sells cocaine. It also affects the children who go without necessities because of a parent’s addiction and those who miss hugs goodnight when a parent is jailed on charges related to their abuse of drugs or alcohol. It leaves a lasting impression as well on the teens that continue the abuse cycle begun by their parents or grandparents.

  • Lady Panthers team, coaches host basketball clinic Dec. 7

    The coaching staff and players of the Lady Panthers will join junior Panther coaches for a girls junior Panther basketball clinic from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 at Carroll County High School.

    The clinic for teams in first through fourth grades is 4 to 5:30 p.m. The clinic for teams in grades five and six is 5:30 until 7 p.m.

    The clinic will focus on the fundamental skills of the game to help the girls become better players.

  • Committee seeks funding to connect parks with trails

    Imagine seven miles of walking and hiking trails that could take you from General Butler State Resort Part to Carroll County’s Robert Westrick Memorial Park.

    Connecting the two parks with a new trail along the abandoned Lock Road is one of the goals of the county’s Recreational Trails Committee, led by Joan Moore, executive director of the Carroll County Community Development Corporation.

  • KSP investigates death of Carrollton man, 50

    The Kentucky State Police are investigating the death of Ronald Dean Tingle, 50, after he was found unconscious and unresponsive Friday, Nov. 21.

    The first call was received at Carroll County Dispatch at 10:26 p.m., according to records; and EMS personnel and Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputy J.T. Shaw were sent to the home of Matt Vories on  State Hwy. 36 East. A second ambulance was dispatched less than a minute later.
