  • Three Owen County students expelled, face charges after alleged school, church vandalism

    The three students involved in vandalism at Owen County High School were expelled and face charges of animal cruelty and criminal mischief.

    According to Owen County Sheriff Zemer Hammond, the incident took place in the early morning hours of May 20.

    The three students began the spree of vandalism at Salem Baptist Church, where nearly a dozen other teens stopped by following a campfire.

    At least that is what the Carrollton Fire Department is hoping for, as the department will be bringing the White Castle Bus to Carrollton this Saturday.

    The bus will be at the Carrollton Fire Department, 750 Clay St., from noon-5 p.m. Ten percent of the proceeds will benefit the WHAS11 Crusade for Children. This is the 61st annual Crusade for Children weekend, held June 7 and 8, and Carrollton firefighters will take all of the donations to a regional drop-off in Shelbyville Sunday.

  • Fiscal Court approved budget on first reading

    Carroll County’s $12.3 million budget is now on-track to win approval after a quick motion and vote at the May 27 fiscal court meeting.

    Judge-Executive Harold “Shorty” Tomlinson originally brought up the spending plan for fiscal 2014-15 at the May 13 meeting, but magistrates indicated they had not looked at the document and were not prepared to vote on it that day.

    This time, it sailed through approval with no comment or concerns raised.

    Two former University of Kentucky basketball players visited with students at local elementary schools and held a community event May 30 at Carroll County Middle School.

    Champions for a Drug Free Carroll County hosted the events with Jarrod Polson, a senior guard from the 2012 National Championship team and this year’s runners-up team, and Jeff Sheppard, a guard who played for both Rick Pitino’s 1996 championship team and Orlando “Tubby” Smith’s 1998 championship team.

    Trimble County native Jacob Blair, an Eastern Kentucky University senior, will be working for the local newspapers for 10 weeks as a part of the Kentucky Press Association internship offered to college students interested in journalism or public relations.
