  • Set the course for our future – vote Tuesday

    In just a week, the campaigning will be over. Election signs will come down, and we will no longer be bombarded with political ads and the coverage of the national races on the evening news.

    We will know who is going to be the president, who will represent us in the 4th Congressional District and in the state House of Representa-tives, and who will serve on our local city councils and commissions.

  • Local drug problem can affect all of us

     We know there is a drug problem in Carroll County. We see the charges lodged against local residents week after week in the newspaper’s stories and public records.

    It’s so commonplace we might take it for granted. We shouldn’t.

    A couple of experiences Sunday got me thinking about how different the outcomes could have been.

    The first was on a trip to Madison, Ind., in the early afternoon to run an errand. As I made my way down Hwy. 36 toward Milton, I came up behind a car that could not stay in its lane.

  • Council should vote down long-term stays at new campground

     It is more than disappointing to see that Carrollton City Council is already considering going back on a commitment made to local residents when the concept of developing an RV campground on the banks of the Kentucky River was considered and adopted last year.

    At a special meeting last week, city council discussed a resolution that would offer discounts to those who stay for 15 days. That’s a great idea. It might inspire folks to visit our city and take in our region’s natural beauty for more than a few days at a time.

  • Fiscal court should fund 4-H position on ‘stop-gap’ basis

    Carroll County Fiscal Court has the opportunity to make a big difference in the lives of the county’s youth as they consider a request to provide “stop-gap funding” for the Extension service 4-H position.

    The Extension agent position for the county’s 4-H program has been open since Mandy Parker left in 2009. She built an excellent program that involved our youth in healthy, life-enriching programs, some of which continue today because of the dedication of volunteers.

  • Some ‘wishes’ make progress while others still need some work

    The end of the year is always an excellent time to reflect on accomplishments. And I’m happy to say I’ve seen progress on many of the items that I included on my 2010 Christmas wish list for Carroll County.

    This means some of our important needs have been met, while others have seen the first steps of progress.

  • Saturday brings the time to ‘Shop Small’ to aid local business

    There’s a lot of focus on this Friday — it’s the day big retailers mark some special buys and draw big crowds in the pre-dawn hours.

    Yes, I’ve joined some of the people out there in years past, battling for those Black Friday Specials. This year, like more recent years, however, I will be relaxing at home on this day instead of fighting the crowds and interrupting what I hope is a good night’s sleep after stuffing myself on Thursday with my wife’s excellent Thanksgiving fixin’s.

  • City makes progress with tobacco-free ordinance; county needs to act too

    Our community has seen some progressive moves this summer that are long-overdue that can and will benefit our health.

    First, Welch’s Riverside Restaurant decided to make the majority of its facility smoke-free. Owner Junior Welch set aside an area for smokers, but his decision has cleared the air in most of the restaurant that used to have a heavy smell of cigarette smoke.

  • Put agendas aside, tackle the debt crisis

    How can we not be worried about our nation’s debt crisis?

    As I write this, all the politicians in Washington, D.C. are scurrying around trying to take some kind of action to prevent our nation from defaulting on our loans on Aug. 3. Without congressional action to raise the U.S. debt ceiling, we won’t be able to borrow more money. This appears to mean folks would not receive their Social Security checks or veterans’ benefits.

    This is a problem because our federal government now borrows 40 cents of every dollar it spends.

  • Customer service key to welcoming race fans

    As our region prepares for an unprecedented number of visitors next week for the inaugural Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway, I hope we offer a warm welcome that makes these folks want to come back to Carroll County.

    Nearly a year ago, Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and Carrollton Main Street Program teamed up to offer Shining STAR training to help us prepare for the week ahead. This customer service program focusing on service, training, achievement and recognition was developed by TOUR Southern and Eastern Kentucky.
