  • Photo contest offers chance to win prizes, have shot in calendar

    I love to shoot photos in my free time. When I went to San Diego last year, I spent a lot of time capturing scenic pictures and touring through the city’s Gas Lamp district to get a few shots of the historic architecture.

    We often do that when we travel. And some of us do it here at home. Downtown Carrollton is one of the places I often focus on when the seasons change – when trees bloom or there’s a blanket of snow on the ground, or to capture the interesting architecture in the historic district.

  • The death of bin Laden will not bring back our natural sense of security

    It was a long time coming — almost 10 years — but a key objective in the U.S. War on Terror has been accomplished.

    Osama bin Laden is dead.

    In a precision strike, U.S. special forces moved in on a mansion in a compound in Pakistan. Some 40 minutes later. the leader of al-Qaida was dead.

    President Obama addressed the nation late Sunday night telling us that “justice has been done.”

    This has to be good news to anyone who lost a loved one in any of the attacks that came on Sept. 11, 2001.

    There’s a new reality show that airs Sunday nights on CBS that shows how many Americans are struggling through tough economic times.

    "Secret Millionaire" places successful businessmen and women in impoverished communities for a week where they will go out and volunteer to help those in need. They leave all their millions behind and have only the amount that a person on food stamps would receive for a week.

    It’s clear that Carrollton and Carroll County are getting serious about the impact the new Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway will have on our community this summer.
    More than 100 people packed the old courtroom at the downtown courthouse Thursday morning for the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce’s Coffee and Conversation program, with officials from the speedway.

  • I-71 in Carroll County deserves attention, repairs to fix potholes

    Have you driven on Interstate 71 in Carroll County lately? If so, you’ll know our section  of this major highway is in  need of repairs.

    This winter has not been kind to I-71. It’s rough and the number of potholes seems to increase every day. And it’s only going to get worse as the weather breaks in the next month and there is a lot of freezing and thawing to damage the pavement.

    At best, I would say riding through Carroll County is a bumpy experience. It’s hard on both our bodies and our vehicles.

    Have you ever received what appears to be good news, but then start wondering if it really is after you have a chance to start processing it.

    That’s how I felt recently when my company’s human resources department sent us all a note telling us that we would be paying less Social Security tax in 2011.

    Who wouldn’t want to pay less in taxes?

    With Christmas approaching, we all have a wish list that we would like to see under the tree come Dec. 25. I worked up mine a little earlier this month to help those who plan to shop for me this year.

    It was shortly after that I realized I also have a wish list for Carrollton and Carroll County. And what better time to share it than as we close the books on 2010.

  • Deck out the yard; adopt a snowman; get the holiday spirit

    It’s clear that the holiday season has arrived in Carroll County.
    The first real snow of the season fell Saturday, just as a number of Christmas events were held throughout the community.
    I spent all day Saturday working at A Christmas Carroll, which inspired me to haul out the tree and start decorating our home on Sunday. My tree is up and the remaining Christmas decorations will be up by the end of this weekend.

    Everyone appears to be looking to Frankfort or to Washington to take action that will improve our local economy and put people back to work.
    But that’s not necessary.
