  • Unlock nation’s oil and natural gas

    Buried largely beneath the Alaskan tundra and coastal waters is a 145.5 billion-barrel vault of recoverable oil, nearly eight times our measured oil reserves. This does not count our vast supply of untapped oil shale in the Western part of the United States, which a modest estimate places at 800 billion recoverable barrels. Our potential supply of natural gas totals more than 2,000 trillion cubic feet.

    It is widely acknowledged that these resources could satisfy American demand for hundreds of years, if only President Obama would let us use them.

  • Rash of kitchen fires sparks call for safety when using the stove

    Stove fires can create a very scary situation, as well as a costly mistake.

    Roughly 90 percent of the time, they are caused by human error. They tend to be very small at first, but homeowners usually try to douse them using a small fire extinguisher or a bucket of water. However, this confidence in thinking that they can fight a fire this size is what can lead to a situation getting worse, or a person getting seriously injured.

  • Local library taxes are put to good use

     Last week’s News-Democrat included an editorial reprinted from the Lexington Herald Leader. State Auditor Adam Edelen has announced plans to compile an online database that will provide a way for the public to compare tax or fee rates and spending practices of local taxing districts with similar districts around the state.

  • Speak up, be heard; your voice can make a difference on issues

     Our voices can make a difference.

    I expressed concern two weeks ago in my column over a proposal by Carrollton City Council to allow extended stays at the new Two Rivers Campground.

    This was something local residents opposed in planning meetings for the campground as the master plan was developed for Point Park. We were assured that the facility would only allow stays of up to two weeks.

    After publication, I heard from two members of city council who recalled this pledge and took action last week to stop the extended stay proposal, for now.

  • Add a side dish that’s easy with potatoes recipe

     Every year,in June, the meeting of our Caby M. Froman Club is held at Harmony Landing Country Club in Goshen. 

    It is always such a fun time for us because we get all dressed up, wear our hats and have a wonderful luncheon — a day out with the girls. This year’s event was even more fitting for the hats due to the fact that our program of study for this year is thoroughbred horse racing in Kentucky. Our head table was a beautiful array of ladies all dressed in pink and wearing beautiful pink hats.

     So far, I’ve had a lot of great response to my plea for historic photos of Carroll County and all of its cities. The photos I collect will be considered for a book that will be published by Arcadia Publications later this year.

  • Council should vote down long-term stays at new campground

     It is more than disappointing to see that Carrollton City Council is already considering going back on a commitment made to local residents when the concept of developing an RV campground on the banks of the Kentucky River was considered and adopted last year.

    At a special meeting last week, city council discussed a resolution that would offer discounts to those who stay for 15 days. That’s a great idea. It might inspire folks to visit our city and take in our region’s natural beauty for more than a few days at a time.

  • Marriage is not outdated; God created this institution

    I have been thinking about marriage every day for almost six weeks. Not the prospect of getting married—I have already taken the plunge and even have a ring that I wear each day to prove it. Rather, marriage has been on my mind partly because weddings and anniversaries are prevalent this time of year and partly because marriage has been the topic of my sermons in recent weeks.

     For several years now, the General Assembly’s Office of Education Accountability has compiled an annual report that gives us a big-picture look at how our students compare to their counterparts in other states.

    While there are persistent challenges, many tied to poverty, the report has some positive trends certainly worth noting.

  • Memorial Day recognized troops for service, sacrifice to the nation

     Memorial Day is a time to honor our soldiers and remember those who have fallen.  This day also comes at the end of National Military Appreciation Month, an appropriate occasion to reflect on national unity and lend our support to those in uniform.  Although some have tried to paint a picture of the “one percent” over the last several months, there is a real one percent prepared to protect us all: the United States Armed Forces.
