  • Help available for victims of domestic violence

Each fall, just a few weeks before Domestic Violence Awareness Month begins in October, many of the nation’s programs that serve those who have been battered or abused take a real-time census of their work over a 24-hour period.  By focusing on an otherwise normal day, we can better see the tragic reach of one of society’s most enduring problems.

  • Fall is a great time to evaluate goals, plan for the future

Fall is here! It is pumpkin spice latte, sweater, boots, football, chili, apple picking, pumpkin patch weather. Well at least the calendar says so, even if the temperature gauge does not. I bet if you went back to see all of my columns published in October, they will all start with some sort of homage to fall, my favorite time of the year.

  • Arney: Under eating can slow down fat loss

When you begin a fat loss transformation, you are likely to be feeling highly motivated, so it can definitely be tempting to under eat and do excessive amounts of cardio to get a “head start.” I understand all of those things and the reasons for doing it, however it will potentially slow down your fat loss and it will eventually have a negative impact on your overall body composition.

  • Real newspapers, real news

“Real Newspapers, Real News” is the theme of this year’s National Newspaper Week (Oct. 1-7.) Indeed, there’s always been lots of “real” at newspapers. Real stories, real journalism, real work, real deadlines, real honesty, real facts, real changes and, now, real threats.

  • Seeking ways to curb drug use

In many ways, it is impossible to calculate the true cost of the drug epidemic that has grown exponentially since the turn of the century.
