  • Precious areas in county should not be unprotected

    It appears that a liquid asphalt storage facility will soon be built on the banks of the Kentucky River, just outside Prestonville in Carroll County.

    A Louisville company purchased property there and has jumped through the regulatory hoops that will allow construction to begin on the storage tanks and its barge facility on the river.

    But there are many local residents upset with the plan to have barge-loads of liquid asphalt shipped here because of its impact on the rivers, our tourism industry and nearby residents.

  • Should Fiscal Court cut contributions to fire departments?

    If you have a lot of time to spare, ask a fire chief for a tour of their stations and equipment. I spent over an hour with the chiefs of the Bedford and Milton Volunteer Fire Departments who wanted to show me the equipment they have and how all of it could be crucial, given the right kind of emergency.

  • Commissioner explains his bid decision

    Last week there was a letter to the editor from a person voicing his concern about the way a recent bid was handled by the city commission in Bedford.

    First, I would like to thank the man for taking the time to exhibit his opinion because I am a city commissioner in Bedford. Personally, I believe the more people involved in our local government the better. After all, it is our community and each of us has a right, and even more a responsibility, to make this community the best it can be.

  • Sewer issues are concern at detention center

    Something that concerns me (and should the community) has come to my attention recently. I have friends and family who are unfortunately incarcerated in the Carroll County Detention Center. I have learned they have had sewer problems, backed up water, stench and possibly mold.

  • Track team appreciates chance to participate

    The Runnin’ Raiders Track Team would like to thank Trimble County Solid Waste Coordinator and Environmental Enforcement Officer Matt Gossom, Valley View Landfill, our Coach Jeff Vincent, and Trimble County for allowing our young team to be able to participate in the county’s roadside cleanup on Saturday, April 18.

  • Autism fundraiser proved successful

    I want to thank anyone who contributed to or attended my spaghetti lunch fundraiser for a very special project to research autism.

    I appreciate the support and belief in a cause. I want to thank my brownie bakers. I am grateful to Mary Frances Mefford, Pam McNeal, Marcie States, Nikki States, Lisa Nab and my daughter Emily for helping my fund raiser run smoothly.

  • JCTC-Carrollton had a successful Spring Fling

    The JCTC-Carrollton Campus hosted its annual Spring Fling on April 14. 

    This event was sponsored by the three student organizations-Student Government Association, Parent Support Group, and Phi Theta Kappa for the student body.

    Students enjoyed food, a rock wall from the National Guard, and giveaways from local businesses.
