  • Education, job important in ‘11 legislative session

Last week, the General Assembly returned to the Capitol to kick off the main portion of the 2011 Regular Session.

This follows the guidelines established in the state’s Constitution for odd-year meetings, which call for a brief recess after legislators meet for four days in early January to elect House and Senate leaders and establish committee membership for the next two years.

When we returned last Tuesday, Gov. Steve Beshear set the stage for the work ahead when he offered the annual State of the Commonwealth address.

  • Be considerate with that cell phone

I would like to use this space for a little rant this week.

Let me begin by saying I love my cell phone. It’s great for when you are shopping with a friend and need to get back together after going your own ways. I have called the library for a phone number when I am on my way to an appointment and have left the address at home or I’m going to be late and need to call and let someone know. I have even taken a picture of a beautiful sunset with my phone when I encounter one and don’t have my camera.

  • Tax service supports local causes

    Editor:
I am writing this letter to let the citizens of our surrounding area know that Jackson-Hewitt Tax Service supports two very good causes, the Home of the Innocents and Doing Our Part From the Heart.

  • I-71 in Carroll County deserves attention, repairs to fix potholes

Have you driven on Interstate 71 in Carroll County lately? If so, you’ll know our section  of this major highway is in  need of repairs.

This winter has not been kind to I-71. It’s rough and the number of potholes seems to increase every day. And it’s only going to get worse as the weather breaks in the next month and there is a lot of freezing and thawing to damage the pavement.

At best, I would say riding through Carroll County is a bumpy experience. It’s hard on both our bodies and our vehicles.

  • ASCS job evokes fond memories

I remember a character in a book I must have read years ago who always read the obituaries to see if he was still alive.

  • Beware of once friendly chat site on the web

    Editor:

I am writing in regards to a website that I see teens using often to video chat. I want parents to be aware of the danger. It is called Omegle.

This chat website at one time was OK for teens to use. Now every other chat is pure porn. This is something you do not want your kids on.

I watched in horror from chat to chat that they were performing lewd behavior.

Ask your teens about the site, see what they have to say about it and make sure they are aware of the dangers.

  • Labels and extreme politics harm nation

     A Farewell to Arms? Please....

I have long felt that a two party democracy has been crippling progress for America’s future for several decades now. Some call it necessary as a system of checks and balances, but I disagree.

It has gone from Democrats and Republicans to the catch labels “right-wing Conservatives” and “liberal nut jobs” and now finally to “Tea Partiers” and “communists.”
