  • Locals sought peace during Civil War

    The first shots of the War Between the States were fired upon Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, S.C., 150 years ago on April 12, 1861.

    The Louisville Journal speculated that Kentucky Gov. Beriah Magoffin would attempt to join the Confederacy in secession of the union of the United States of America. Magoffin was a state’s rights advocate and believed in each state’s right to secede. Further, he sympathized with the Confederate cause.

  • Carrollton still waits for states to build a bridge to Indiana

    While the Milton-Madison Bridge was in the planning and early construction stages in 1928 there was talk of building yet another bridge spanning the Ohio River at Carrollton. Among the movers and shakers behind the proposed span was Joseph Lyter Donaldson, Carroll County attorney at the time. Donaldson would, in the years to come, serve as chairman of the state highway commission and was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for governor in 1943.

  • 1918 river ice proved destructive to maritime trade on Ohio River

    The oppressive arctic conditions that prevailed throughout the Ohio River Valley and along the river’s tributaries in the winter of 1918 continued late into January. By Jan. 20, many rural and small community schools had been forced to close due to extreme cold and deep snow. It was almost impossible for students on the farms to make their way to the school houses.

  • Milton dike still generates river ripples

             It is one of the most beautiful valley settings offered by any major inland waterway in the United States. From the banks of the Ohio River wide, expansive bottomlands stretch to the feet of tall, majestic hills that stand guard over the valley. The setting is between U.S. Army Corps of Engineers mile markers 556 and 560 on the beautiful Ohio. Here the Ohio River is a common thread binding two small communities on opposite banks of the waterway.

  • Rivers in region froze with bitter cold of 91 years ago

    The current winter season has dumped snowfall on the local area more frequently than has been seen in a number of years.

    Unusual snowy and icy conditions have also been experienced in numerous parts of the south during the past several weeks. But the weather is mild compared to the two months of bitter cold Ohio Valley residents experienced between Dec. 8, 1917, and Feb. 7, 1918. Locals walked, skated and even drove automobiles and heavy horse teams across the frozen Ohio River that winter.

  • Original Kentucky River bridge was completed 110 years ago

    During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons of 110 years ago residents of Carrollton, Prestonville and surrounding environs were enjoying the excitement of having a new, state of the art bridge across the Kentucky River. Gone was the dependence on river ferries to connect east Carroll countians with those in the west.

A small band of religious separatists fleeing religious persecution came to New England in 1620. During that first devastating winter in the New World nearly half their number died. Without the help of a neighboring colony of Indians, the entire number might have perished.
