Girls rebound with win over Conner

After a tough loss to Gallatin County in the NCKC the night before, the Lady Panthers bounced back with a 3-1 win at Conner.

Starting pitcher Sarah Hawkins, who took a line drive to the thigh against the Wildcats, threw a complete game, giving up just one run on six hits. She walked one batter and struck out two.

The Lady Panthers scored first, as Mackenzie Ogden led off the game with a double to center field. With two outs, Mackenzi Hawkins hit an RBI double to center field to put the girls up, 1-0.

Two dates set for blood donations

The Red Cross will hold two upcoming blood drive events in Carroll County to prepare for the summer months head.

The donation opportunities are:

 • 9:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m., May 21 at Dow Corning Corporation, 4770 U.S. Highway 42 East, Carrollton.

• 11:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m., May 28  at North American Stainless, 6870 Highway 42 East, Ghent.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.

Panthers plate three in win over Bearcats

Sophomore Zakk Hicks struck out eight in Carroll’s 3-1 win on the road at Walton-Verona May 9. Justin Ray led the Panthers at the plate, going 3-4 with three singles.

The Panthers scored one run in the first, third and fourth innings. The Bearcats’ only run came on a lead off homerun by Daniel Tilley in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Hicks pitched 5 1/3 innings for eight strikeouts, five walks and three hits. Trey Boles came in for relief, pitching 1 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out two.

Soap Box Derby new to this year’s Race Fest event June 26

Good luck Chamber Golf Scramble participants! The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce’s 10th annual golf scramble is currently under way today, May 15, at the Fairway Golf Course in Wheatley, Ky.

The proceeds from the event provide funding for scholarships for our local students and for chamber events.

Check out next month’s chamber article for a recap of the event.

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce’s Race Fest Day is Wednesday, June 26 on Main Street in downtown Carrollton.  The event will begin at 5 p.m.

Mahoney shouldn’t be persecuted

Editor:

I do not condone drinking and driving and I am sorry about those who were killed in the 1988 bus crash in Carroll County. But I want people to know that Larry Mahoney works every day, he has not been in any trouble with the law, and has done his time.

I do not think the Mothers Against Drunk Driving or anyone else needs to keep persecuting this man. It looks bad.

Jesus said if you are without sin cast the first stone. No one is. We should forgive our brothers as Christ would want us to.

Safety is legacy of bus tragedy

Signs standing on the shoulders of Interstate 71 in rural Carroll County mark the site of one of our country’s most deadly bus disasters. Flowers, crosses, messages and other items can be seen around this sign, left as tokens to honor the lives lost on this stretch of highway.

Late on that May 14, 1988, night, a fiery collision involving a pickup truck in the wrong lane operated by a drunken driver and a church bus packed with children forever changed the lives of so many more.

Summer reading opens new world to local children

As the end of school approaches this week, I know everyone is very excited for summer break. There just seems to be a little extra charge in the air on that first day of no school, even for those of us who still have to work every day during the summer. It is ingrained in us after 13 of our early years of counting down to the first day of summer.

It represents a time of freedom and excitement. There are usually vacations and an opportunity to catch up on your favorite soap opera (at least that is what we did in the stone ages).
