Woman’s club hears from new...

Carrollton Woman’s Club met May 7 at Pat’s Place on Seminary Street in Carrollton. Karen Claiborne was hostess for the evening.

The education program was given by Joyce Doyle, who has served as Carroll County 4-H Extension agent since fall of 2012.

Doyle  told the members that she is excited to be in Carroll County. She has organized students in the fifth grade at Cartmell Elementary School to give either speeches or demonstrations.

Thirteen of those students competed in the district and five are now going to state.

Panthers plate three in win over...

Sophomore Zakk Hicks struck out eight in Carroll’s 3-1 win on the road at Walton-Verona May 9. Justin Ray led the Panthers at the plate, going 3-4 with three singles.

The Panthers scored one run in the first, third and fourth innings. The Bearcats’ only run came on a lead off homerun by Daniel Tilley in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Hicks pitched 5 1/3 innings for eight strikeouts, five walks and three hits. Trey Boles came in for relief, pitching 1 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out two.

Baseball season ends with...

 On any given night, any team can beat any other team. Unfortunately, Monday was Gallatin’s night.

After defeating the Wildcats twice this season by large margins – 11-5 at home April 5 and 12-1 at Gallatin April 18 – the Panthers may have overlooked their opponent and took for granted that they would be sitting in the championship game.

Carrollton Utilities Commission will hold its monthly meeting at noon at the Carrollton Utilities building on Sixth Street.

Carrollton Rotary Club meets Wednesday at noon at the lodge at General Butler State Resort Park.

AA Big Book study groups meets every Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Carrollton Christian Church, 310 Fifth St.

Cartmell Elementary School Site Based Decision Making Council meets at 3:30 p.m. an the school.

Tasty Travels Across America...

Northern Kentucky Extension agents for family and consumer sciences present a program featuring favorite foods from states all across the country Wednesday, May 30.

The program is offered twice that day — noon to 1:30 pm and 6-7:30 p.m.

Due to the success of this program last year, agents are inviting farmers market vendors, food service personnel and FCS educators.

Insecticides can help win battle...

Have you noticed the presence of carpenter bees around your home lately?

These beneficial pollinators can be intimidating.  They are relatively large in size and can cause considerable structural damage over time.

Carp-enter bees spend the winter as adults in their gallery homes.  Now, they are starting new tunnels or expanding old ones in order to raise a brood of about six larvae during the summer.  Accumulations of sawdust may be the first sign that their work has begun.

Mahoney shouldn’t be persecuted

I do not condone drinking and driving and I am sorry about those who were killed in the 1988 bus crash in Carroll County. But I want people to know that Larry Mahoney works every day, he has not been in any trouble with the law, and has done his time.

I do not think the Mothers Against Drunk Driving or anyone else needs to keep persecuting this man. It looks bad.

Jesus said if you are without sin cast the first stone. No one is. We should forgive our brothers as Christ would want us to.

Safety is legacy of bus tragedy

Signs standing on the shoulders of Interstate 71 in rural Carroll County mark the site of one of our country’s most deadly bus disasters. Flowers, crosses, messages and other items can be seen around this sign, left as tokens to honor the lives lost on this stretch of highway.

Late on that May 14, 1988, night, a fiery collision involving a pickup truck in the wrong lane operated by a drunken driver and a church bus packed with children forever changed the lives of so many more.

Track athletes compete at state...

 Carroll County High School track and field athletes competed at the Class A State Track & Field Meet Saturday, held at the University of Louisville. 

Junior Tre Burgin tried, but was unable to clear starting height in pole vault. The starting height was 9 feet 6 inches, which would have been a new personal best.

Junior Ashley Srouder threw just three inches shy of her personal best (also the school record) in her 11th place finish in girls shot put with a throw of 31 feet.
