The Carroll County boys’ tennis team clinched its second win over Gallatin County this season, 3-2, on Tuesday, April 17.

Sergio Pascual cruised past Gallatin’s No. 1 singles player, 6-1, 6-2, and has not lost this season in singles. “He is playing very well and getting better as the season progresses, due mainly to his recovery from breaking his leg during soccer season where he was told he would not be able to play tennis due to his injury,” head coach Juan Fernandez said.

The Lady Panthers had hoped this would be the year their fortunes turned around in the All-A Classic tournament. Unfortunately, they will have to wait another year for a chance at the title, as the girls fell 12-2 in six innings to Owen County Friday, April 13. 

Head coach Dennis Hawkins said his team had the “Friday the 13th Blues.” “We played like it was Friday the 13th,” he said, “and we had two left feet and two left hands.”

For the first time in four years, the Carroll County Panthers did not return home with the 8th Region All-A Classic trophy.

After defeating Williamstown Thursday 2-1 in nine innings, the Panthers struggled at the plate and lost 3-0 to Owen County. The game began on Saturday, but was rain delayed after just one inning and continued on Sunday.

Head coach Josh Mefford said his team did not play badly, they just failed to score. “You can’t win games if you don’t score any runs.”

Bottom of the fourth. With two outs and Brandon Franklin on second base, Jacob Wise hit a ground ball to the Holmes shortstop. He boots it, but makes the throw to first. Not in time.

With a full head of steam, Franklin rounds the corner and barrels toward home plate. The throw home is in time, and the catcher prepares to make the tag. But Franklin will not be denied. He leaps over the catcher like a hurdler on the track team and lands on home plate, giving the Panthers a 3-0 advantage.
