If the first quarter were like the first pancake, the Carroll County Panthers would have been within striking distance of the Owen County Rebels Thursday night, down only 32-29 in the final three quarters of play. Unfortunately, first quarters cannot be thrown out. The Rebels outscored the home team 16-2 in the opening eight minutes, giving them a 48-31 victory.

“We came out and, for whatever reason, I thought we played a little nervous. We missed a bunch of easy shots,” Carroll head coach Carroll Yager said.

The Lady Panthers’ defense smothered the Eminence Warriors, forcing 46 turnovers—including 33 steals—as they glided to season-opening 54-17 victory on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

“We wanted to come out with a lot of intensity and really get after them some and see how good at ball handling they were and see if we could turn them over a lot, and we did,” Carroll head coach Randy Mefford said.

The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 25-2 advantage after one quarter of play, making a comeback near impossible for the Warriors.

Trimble County’s Skiler Alexander toed the charity stripe with 19.4 seconds remaining in a frenzied game with border rival Carroll County—a contest where the momentum had swung back and forth like the pendulum on a grandfather clock. Alexander and his Raiders had watched a 14-point, 57-43 lead gradually disappear over the final five minutes of the game.

Basketball season begins for the Carroll County High School Panthers and Lady Panthers. The Black and Gold scrimmage games were held on Nov. 22. Both teams opened their season with a win. The girls defeated Eminence 54-17 at home, while the boys defeated Dayton 77-62 on the road.
