After being unceremoniously bounced from the 31st District tournament by Gallatin County, the Carroll County High School girls’ basketball team is ready to get back on track.

Leading the way is senior Hannah Devine, who averaged 25.3 points per game last season, good enough for third-best in the state. She also connected on 80 3-point baskets, second highest in the state, and was named to the All-District, All-A and All-Conference teams.

The Holy Cross (Covington) Indians ended the Carroll County Panthers’ season for the third time in four years with their 68-0 shutout Friday night in the opening round of the Class 2A playoffs at Holmes High School.

The Panthers entered the game with the top passing defense in 2A, but was shredded for four touchdowns by quarterback Kyle Fuller. “Their front line on both sides of the ball was very good,” head coach Mike Weedman said. “(We) had opportunities early, and they were just pretty darn good.”

The elementary and middle school Panthers competed in their final meet of the 2011 season Saturday morning at the Henry County Renaissance Run. Head coach Joe Creager said the team had great results and brought home two Top 10 trophies and three Top 25 medals.

“It was a very cold morning but that didn’t slow the Panthers down,” he said. “Thanks to everyone who has helped make this a great season. Hope to see everyone back next year.”

Trimble County struck first and ran the ball successfully against the Carroll County defense. But ultimately, it was seniors Carson Butcher and Trent Downs who carried the Panthers to victory Friday night at home.

Butcher scored four touchdowns on the ground, while Downs threw for two more to give Carroll a 41-26 win over their district and border rival. With the win, the Panthers clinched a district playoff berth.
