The Carroll County High School track and field team saw its first action of the 2013 season Saturday at the University of Kentucky’s Wildcat Classic indoor invitational.

It was a good start for the Panthers season against some of the best athletes from across the state, head coach Joe Creager said in an e-mail. The meet had several records broken, showing the top-level quality of the athletes in competition there. As the team progresses through the season, Creager said he would use this meet as a reference for where the team started and how to improve.

Walton-Verona played what their coaches said was the best game they had played all year, defeated Carroll County 71-42 in the second round of the All-A Classic Friday, Jan. 18 at Williamstown.

“They played very, very well and they did a lot of things that caused us to struggle,” Panthers head coach Carroll Yager said.

Decimated by injuries, the Carroll County boys basketball team easily could have hung their heads and given up on the remainder of the season. But the Panthers refused and have accepted their new roles and played tough against the No. 2-ranked team in the 8th Region Thursday night.

Carroll hung with the Anderson County Bearcats the entire way and was within four points at the start of the fourth quarter. But the home team could not get enough shots to fall, while the Bearcats ran down the clock and hit enough free throws down the stretch to defeat Carroll 63-54.

Two members of the Carroll County High School football team were recently recognized by the Courier Journal in Louisville for the fantastic seasons they had. Running back Tyshaun Embs and offensive tackle Josh Gibbs were named Honorable Mention All-State by the paper, which published Christmas Day. This marks the first time since 1994 that Carroll County has had a player named to the All-State team.
