  • Carroll plays ‘best game of the...

    The Panthers scored 10 runs on nine hits to beat Walton-Verona 10-3 at home Saturday. John Michael Adams hit a solo home run to left center field to lead off in the bottom of the fifth and also earned the win on the mound. He pitched five innings, striking out three, walking one and giving up three hits. Justin Ray came on in relief, pitching two innings with two strikeouts, three walks and one hit.

  • Carroll softball wins at Eminence

    The Lady Panthers softball team defeated Eminence in a doubleheader by scores of 17-0, 15-0, on March 20 at Eminence. Cheyenne Lawrence was the winning pitcher in game one, while Michaela Culver won game two. Carroll (4-0) plays Shelby County on the road Thursday before competing in the Oldham County Spring Break Classic Friday and Saturday.

    Carroll County High School baseball suffered its first loss of the season Monday, falling 5-1 to Martha Layne Collins at home.

    The Panthers (4-1) gave up four runs in the top of the second, but hung in with the pre-season 8th Region No. 1 team the rest of the way.

    The Lady Panthers scored 10 runs in the second inning en route to a season-opening 15-4 win at Grant County Friday. Carroll County collected 14 hits in the win and were led by senior Kelsey Ogden, who hit two doubles and a single for seven RBIs.

    Senior Kayla Williamson also had three hits and one RBI. Senior Michaela Culver hit two doubles, good for two RBIs, while freshman Houston Lindsay hit a single and a double for two RBIs. Freshman Haley Dermon got two hits and an RBI, freshman Jenah Roberts had one hit and one RBI and freshman Cheyenne Lawrence had one hit.

    This season’s Carroll County High School track and field team boasts a mix of state qualifiers on the high school and middle school levels, experienced athletes and new talent ready to test themselves for the first time. 

    Eighteen student-athletes signed up this season, including nine seniors: Branden Brock, Tre Burgin, Alex Burns, Cheyenne Duke, Michael Hall, Blake Kruzan, Sierra Martinez, Cody Osborne and Ashley Srouder.

    For softball seniors Michaela Culver, Sarah Hawkins, Kelsey Ogden, Mackenzie Ogden, Kayla Williamson and Brittany Yocum, 2014 is their year. This core group has been playing together since they were children and some have been starters for the Carroll County High School Lady Panthers since seventh grade. This should be the year that this team meets its full potential and makes a name for itself.

    Head coach Dennis Hawkins certainly believes in this team.

    The Lady Panthers tennis team had the first-game jitters, but were still able to come away with a 3-2 win over border rival Gallatin County Monday.

    “I thought it was very rough,” head coach Juan Fernandez said. “They were very nervous.”

    It was rough at times, but the Lady Panthers were able to make enough plays when the game was on the line to win, 7-6, over Walton-Verona Tuesday in their home opener at Lady Panther Field.

  • Heavy lifters

    Carroll County student-athletes Caleb Guenthner, Terrance Mumphrey, Ramsey Gordon, Zak Wilson and Darrien Byrd traveled to North Bullitt High School to compete in the State Push/Pull weight lifting competition. 

    Juniors Mumphrey, Guenthner and Gordon competed in the varsity division. In the 220-pound weight class, Ramsey placed fourth. Mumphrey and Guenthner were both in the 275 weight class. Mumphrey came in first place in their weight class, while Guenthner placed second.
