  • Football organizational session...

    Parents of students entering sixth, seventh or eighth grades this fall and wanting to play football are asked to attend an organizational meeting Monday, July 6 in the auditorium at Carroll County Middle School at 6 p.m.

    Students also are expected to attend that night where the team rules and expectations will be discussed, some equipment will be given out as well as practice and game schedules, according to coach John T. Booth.  

    The practices will begin the following night, Tuesday July 7 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

  • British soccer camp to be held...

    The British are coming and they are going to teach soccer to youth ages three to 16 in Carroll County July 27-31 at Robert Westrick Memorial Park on State Hwy. 36.

    Challenger Sports British Soccer camp’s Daniel Miller said parents can register their kids online at www.challengersports.com or by calling (913) 599-4884.

    Challenger has British soccer players as coaches at the camp, Miller said and families can also host coaches to stay in their homes during the week of camp.

    MADISON, Ind. – Major-league powerboat racing returns to the Ohio River this weekend with the 59th running of the Indiana Governor’s Cup race.

    This year, for the first time, the Madison Regatta serves as the opening event of the international American Boat Racing Association schedule. Stops in Michigan, Washington, Canada and Indiana will follow, culminating with the Onyx Cup World Championship Race in the Middle East at Doha, Qatar, in November.

  • Lady Panthers attend Georgetown...

    The Carroll County Lady Panthers middle and high school basketball teams attended Georgetown College Team Basketball Camp last week. The junior varsity team coached by Briana Bowling, won the “Champions of Character Award,” according to head coach Randy Mefford.

  • Edwards wins $8,000 places ninth...

    A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work, and Gary Edwards of Milton definitely had three good days of fishing, winning $8,000 in the All American fishing tournament.

    Edwards, a local competitive bass angler and national winner fished his way into the prestigious All-American last October after coming in sixth in the Chevy Trucks Wild Card tournament.  Edwards took home $8,000 for his ninth place finish May 28-30 in Moline, Ill., in the All American.

  • Youth soccer league has a mission

    When members of his church decided to offer a summer soccer program for local children, Pastor Tom Starks was prepared.

    Or so he thought.

    Relying on his own background in the sport, he held a coach’s clinic and trained seven people to help. Then he prayed that enough children would sign up to fill rosters for seven teams.

    “God outsmarted me again,” Starks said in a phone interview Monday. By the end of the sign-up period, 157 children – enough for 21 teams – had registered to play.

  • Abbott takes on role with...

    A former Carroll County Panther football standout is now a defensive coordinator for a minor league football team, the Frankfort Falcons.  

    Dusty Abbott, a 1994 graduate of Carroll County, scampered up and down the field when he played for coach Doug Barry on one of the most successful teams Carrollton ever had and now he can be seen roaming the sidelines for the Falcons.

  • Rain halts TC church league...

    Sunday afternoon’s rain soaked T-shirts but didn’t dampen spirits during Opening Day for the Trimble County Church Softball League.

    The 2009 league has six teams, Milton Baptist’s Nos. 1, 2 and 3; Mount Byrd Christian Church’s Bats (team No. 1) and Gloves (team No. 2); and one team from Bedford Christian Church. All games are played on the softball field at Trimble County Park.

  • Students attend PeeWee camp

    PeeWee football camp was in session last week and this year there was something new at camp — girls.

    Two second-grade girls, Alexis Tillett and Madalyn Sanders attended camp in addition to 24 other young boys and loved it according to Alexis’ father, assistant coach Jason Tillet.

    Carroll County Panther football head coach Mike Weedman puts on the camp to stress fundamentals to upcoming players.  The first through third grade group is the largest, Weedman said, and we try to teach fundamentals.
