Transitional housing proposal
causes stir at city meeting

Driven by rumors and gossip, citizens filled the Morgan Community Center meeting room Monday night to hear comments on a proposed transitional home for prison parolees in Bedford. The proposal for a transitional home, or half-way house, was made during a regular meeting of the Bedford City Commission and included many county and business leaders.

Jerry Stribling of Louisville spoke to the commission and the audience and outlined a proposal for housing newly released non-violent prisoners at 215 Highway 421 North. He introduced himself as a professional social worker and spoke on behalf of Pat and Ann Snyder, who own the home.

Tobacco Festival tradition
continues in Carroll County

Even without funding from the big tobacco companies, the Carroll County Tobacco Festival continues to entertain.

For decades, giants in the tobacco industry, such as R.J. Reynolds and Phillip Morris, donated much of the money needed to pull off the county’s annual salute to the state’s largest cash crop. But as tobacco-related health risks began to emerge and the market steadily declined, those sponsorships were whittled away and the festival itself began to fade.

But a determined group of local people that has coordinated the festivities since 2000 is getting ready for the 2006 version, and organizer Daisy Hughes said the event is once again growing in size and popularity.

Teen-aged girl awakens
to find intruder in bedroom

A Carrollton man was arrested last week after a teen-age girl awoke to find him in her bedroom.

According to Carrollton Police Department Chief Mike Willhoite, officers responding to a complaint of an intruder in a Sycamore Street home.  He said the girl “made noise” when she saw him that alerted the homeowners and caused the man to flee.

Sidewalk program to proceed in Carrollton

For the past several years, Carrollton officials have earmarked funding in the fiscal budget to replace dilapitated sidewalks throughout the city.

And despite a late start, the 2006 Carrollton sidewalk project is expected to be completed before the year ends.
