Guard unit called to serve

In a couple of months, the soldiers of Alpha Battery of the 2nd Battalion, 138th Field Artillery, based in Carroll County, will be patroling U.S. military compounds in Afghanistan.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, they were honored by their friends and families, local, state and federal dignitaries, and the community at large, as heroes leaving to serve their country.

By the time the ceremony was under way, the Carroll County High School gymnasium was standing-room only.

Teacher arrested on 4 counts of sexual misconduct

SHELBYVILLE, Ky. – A former Trimble County teacher is out on bond after being arrested for sex-related charges.

Scott Stumbo, 46, who now teaches industrial arts at Shelby County High School,was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with distributing obscene materials to a minor and three counts of harassment, according to reports from the Kentucky State Police.

He will remain on the school's payroll, however, while the school conducts its own internal investigation, said Superintendent Elaine Farris.

Carrollton transitional home plan scrapped

Plans to convert a single-family dwelling into a transitional housing complex for former inmates have been abandoned.

Pat Snyder had been scheduled to appear before the Carrollton Board of Adjustments last night, Oct. 17, to discuss plans for the half-way house, which was to be located at 702 11th St.

According to building inspector John Welch, this would have been the first step for Snyder in his effort to create the facility for newly released non-violent offenders.

School district begins new assessment program

In an effort to identify and help struggling students more quickly and effectively the Trimble County school district is turning to a new testing program. The ThinkLink Predictive Assessment Series, which replaces Scantron this year, is designed to help teachers and administrators determine where students need help in their subjects and to prepare for them for testing in CATS and No Child Left Behind.

Sheila Rowlett, director of school curriculum for the Trimble district, said the ThinkLink test results will show specifically whether a student is proficient or failing in any given subject and will hopefully lead to better corrective measures.

Ghost, goblins and ghouls abound as Carroll County celebrates the creepiest holiday of the year.

Whether looking for activities for young children or planning a night out with a partner, several local groups promise something scary for everyone.

Arkema’s Haunted Barn. Beginning this weekend, adults and older children are invited to the Haunted Barn on U.S. 42 near Arkema. Sponsored by the company’s Relay for Life Team and staffed by Arkema employees and friends, the barn is guaranteed to make you scream. Organizer Amy Campbell suggests leaving smaller children at home, as the “little kids would probably be really scared.”
