Pence stumps for cervical cancer awareness

Last week, as Gov. Ernie Fletcher presented a check to Carrollton Utilities for the utility’s wastewater treatment plant, Lt. Gov. Steve Pence talked to local college students about medical advancements that may one day eradicate cervical cancer.

Pence’s visit to Jefferson Community and Technical College on Tuesday, Oct. 17, was one of eight stops he is making as part of the National Lieutenant Governors Association cervical cancer awareness project.

Milton man lives to tell of miracle

A Milton man can attest that miracles do indeed happen, and that on occasion, they even fall directly from the sky.

On Feb. 7, 2006, Henry “Dobber” Thompson was working on an asphalt storage tank in Sandersville, Mississippi, when an early morning explosion caused him to plunge 40 feet to the ground. According to local news reports out of Laurel, Mississippi, the explosion triggered a response from seven fire stations and rattled many nearby homes. Luckily, the explosion did not result in a fire and no one was killed. However, Thompson was critically injured and unconscious and did not appear to be breathing.

Teacher seeks to honor disabled

Amy Hewitt said she has seen “many incidents in the county” where bystanders are unsure how to help a disabled person who needs minor medical attention.

And because of this and what she views as a lack of understanding of the disabled community, she has encouraged Carroll County Judge-Executive Harold “Shorty” Tomlinson and members of the Fiscal Court to proclaim the first week of November as Disability Awareness Week.

Candidate’s suit against city to go
before federal judge in November 2007

A civil suit filed against a city police officer and various city and county departments and personnel will be heard in federal court next fall.

Jeffrey C. Mando of Adams, Stepner, Woldermann and Dusing in Covington, the attorney representing Officer Rodney Hawkins, the Carrollton Police Department and the City of Carrollton, said he had the case, which was filed by Carrollton resident Danny L. Maiden, removed from the state Circuit Court docket to the Sixth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals.
