Carrollton native among Iraq wounded

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Like most sniper victims, Pvt. Shane Hornbeck didn’t hear the gunshot itself. The Carrollton, Ky., native had been pulling security and watching one of the ever-present groups of children at an intersection for about 15 minutes. As he turned to his left, he said, the bullet struck.

He first thought a firecracker — possibly thrown by the kids — had gone off and somehow hit him. But it was the sound of the bullet hitting his protective side plate.

War in Iraq comes home for local mom

CARROLLTON, Ky. – “It seems like an eternity” since her son, Shane Hornbeck, was deployed to Iraq, but it’s really only been about four months, said Deanna Weber of Carrollton.

And for someone who never expected to be a “military mom” in the first place, getting used to the idea that her son is fighting in a war has been difficult.

4 houses deemed unsafe at Ghent public hearing

GHENT, Ky. – Despite the cries of a concerned citizen who insists that the Ghent City Commission and others in the city are trying to tear apart a local family, officials claim they are only interested in the health and safety of all the city’s residents.

Last Tuesday evening, Janice Lewellyn was one of the most vocal attendees in the standing-room-only crowd at Ghent City Hall as the commission prepared to hear comments on whether four local homes are fit for occupancy.

Leadership program to explore local community

BEDFORD, Ky. – So, just what is it that makes Trimble County tick? What is it that makes Trimble County, so . . . Trimble County? If you have ever wondered then perhaps you should consider going to class.

Starting in January the Trimble County Extension Service will begin a new program that will explore the many aspects of Trimble County. The program is called Leadership Trimble County and it is based on a statewide model designed to promote leadership qualities and a better understanding of the community we live in.
