Carroll County Schools Superintendent Lisa James, Ed., made a surprise announcement at Thursday's Board of Education meeting: She is retiring as of June 30. James has been superintendent for six years and worked for Carroll County Schools 27 years.

James said it was fitting that she make this announcement in the Carroll County Middle School because that is where she started as a teacher. In a prepared statement, she thanked a number of people, including the Board of Education members – especially Chairwoman Mona Kindoll who has been on the Board since she became Superintendent – district personnel and all of the teachers.

James said she looks forward to having more time to spend with her family, especially her grandchildren.

"It is a great loss for our district, and we appreciate all Mrs. James has done for our district," Kindoll said.

Kindoll said James will help the school district search for its next superintendent.

"It is with a heavy heart that we accept this," Kindoll said.
