    Thirty-two contestants representing local scholarship pageants from across the state will be vying for the title of Miss Kentucky 2013 and this year one of the semi-finalists will be determined by the public, rather than the panel of judges.

    Why did I want to be a Big Sister when I had four grandchildren under the age of four?

    I thought I could give an hour a week to make a child feel as special as I tried to make my own grandchildren feel.

    Tara was in kindergarten when we started meeting at school in 2010. I was babysitting three days a week for two of my grandchildren and had visits from my others regularly I visited with Tara on days that I had off from my Grammy duties.

  • Child development center rolls out ‘STEAM Bus’ this week

    The Carroll County Child Development Center is literally rolling out a new program as its new Mobile Education Bus hits the road this week.  Preschool teacher Carmen Mitchell and bus drivers Kim Horine, Kelly Warren, and Amy Saggus will begin visiting eight locations throughout Carroll County to engage preschool children and their parents in a variety of fun, hands-on learning activities.

    Two students named to UK dean’s list

    Two Carroll County students were named to the University of Kentucky Dean’s List for the Spring 2013 semester. Senior Devon Hill is majoring in chemical engineering and sophomore Kristen Thornsberry is majoring in nutrition, and food science-hospitality management and tourism. To make a dean’s list, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.6 or higher with 12 credits or more in that semester, excluding credits earned in pass-fail classes.

  • Princess for a day

    Relay for Life Team Robbins held “Pageant Prep” Saturday, May 18, at the Carroll County Middle School. The day was dedicated to giving all girls the royal princess treatment. The girls received tips on make up and hair; self-confidence and self-esteem; walking, posing and poise tips; wardrobe tips; and etiquette lessons. They participated in mock interviews with public speaking advice. The girls also got their picture taken with pageant queens from across the state. All money raised benefited the Carroll County Relay for Life.

  • Performers ready for C’ton Idol stage

    Dim the lights, cue the music. Carrollton Idol returns to the stage at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 15 at the Carroll County Fair.

    The singing competition, a local take on the TV hit “American Idol,” which will feature 12 local talents vying for the title of Carrollton Idol and a $300 grand prize. Runner-up will receive $150 and third place will receive $50.

    Re-live the glory days of the 1980s as Carrollton Idol contestants belt out the hits. There also will be a tribute to the late George Jones, organizer Melanie Stewart said.

    At the June 14 show, four children will sing: Shianne Mefford, Jaden Stephens, Ryan Cain and Kaitlyn Reynolds.
