The Trimble County Public Library is one of 18 counties in Kentucky to receive the Prime Time Family Reading Initiative, a service of the Kentucky Humanities Department.

Seventy-five% of Trimble County’s elementary students are reading below the proficiency level with the remaining 25% reading at or above the proficiency level. The Kentucky average of students reading at, or above proficiency is 67-68%.

Prime Time Family Reading is a six-week program with sessions lasting 90 minutes and geared to 6-10 years old students and their parents. Complimentary books are provided to all participants.

Sessions will be held for both Milton and Bedford Elementary schools with the meetings alternating between the two schools.

Specially trained storytellers will read beautifully illustrated, award-winning children’s books filled with culturally diverse stories, folk tales, and historical accounts from around the world. Trained discussion leaders will guide participants to personally connect with literature and think beyond the who, what, when and where with open-ended questions that inspire critical thinking.

An interpreter, if needed, will be available, child-care will be provided for children under the age of first grade, dinner will be provided for group participants, and door prizes will be awarded each evening.

The program is scheduled to run from the beginning of June through mid-July though specific nights have yet to be determined. Nearly 20 families have already registered. Registrations is available be calling the Trimble County Public Library at 502-255-7362.
